My daughter came home from school excited to share a little about a speaker that was at her school today. Unfortunately we missed the parent version the day before but here’s a short snippet about Ed Gerety. Apparently she was not the only one impressed with him, his facebook page has many comments from the kids at Stonybrook and Blanchard.

Project INTERFACE collects and categorizes a wide range of valuable resources related to mental health and wellness for the benefit of the general public – children, adults and families – as well as educators and mental health professionals. In addition to the resources on this web site, Project INTERFACE maintains a mental health and wellness referral help line Monday through Friday, 9 am-5 pm, at 617-332-3666 x 411 or toll free at 1-888-244-6843 x411.

This is a free, confidential referral service for participating communities. Callers are matched from our extensive database of licensed mental health providers. Each referral meets the location, insurance, and specialty needs of the caller. If you or anyone you know in Westford is worried about their child, please let them know about this very valuable tool. Navigating through the mental health care system can be so challenging. Finding therapists and psychiatrists who can help with issues that children may be facing is not easy. It can be so discouraging when you are facing difficulties to not be able to get the help you so desperately need. By being a participating community, our residents (as well as any parent of students who attend Westford Public Schools) can call the help line and speak to a health care provider. Parents (or school personnel acting on a parent’s behalf) can let them know the insurance, and let them do the ‘homework’ to find someone who is available to see the child. Besides the helpline, the website itself is filled with a great deal of information for parents and educators.

MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH MANDATE

The state’s BMI Screening mandate (M.G.L. c.71 s.57) requires that all schools collect height and weight measurements of students in grades 1, 4, 7, and 10. The measurements will be used to calculate BMI and the results will be reported to students’ parents or guardians and to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Over the next couple of months, the school nurses will be conducting height, weight and BMI screenings on the students in grades 1, 4, 7, and 10. Parents and guardians may waive their child’s BMI screening by submitting a written request to their child’s school nurse. Please feel free to contact your school nurse with any questions or concerns.

Mess About with Clay and create a Spirit Animal with Ann McCrae: Saturday, November 14 at 1:00 p.m. Come and celebrate our countries Native American culture this Thanksgiving by sculpting your own Spirit Animal. Native Americans have always believed that their handmade clay spirit animals connect the humans who carry them to the spirit world and to the spirit of the animal it represents. Spirit Animals have helped Native Americans meditate and face challenges wisely. This program is open to Tweens and Teens in 5 to 12 grade. Seasonal Refreshments will be served. Join the Library’s Young Adult Advisory Board. We are looking for teens grades 6-12 to meet monthly to discuss programming ideas and make materials recommendations. New members are welcome. Talking To Your Kids About Sex – November 4

If you’re like most parents, you may be dreading the so-called “big talk” with your kids about sex. When’s the best time? How much should you say? Are you concerned that they’re getting the wrong information on the school bus or playground? Help is on the way.

The Westford Parent Connection (WPC) and the Westford Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) have teamed up to bring Sally Fogel, M.Ed., to Westford. Ms. Fogel, an AASECT-certified sexuality educator,will give parents the right words to use to start an ongoing conversation with their children about sexuality, relationships, values, and more. Her talk is appropriate for parents of children of all ages and abilities.

Ms. Fogel’s talk is scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, at 7:00 p.m. in the Blanchard Middle School Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. Concerned About The Role Technology Plays In Your Kids’ Lives? – November 12

The Internet offers almost limitless opportunities to gain knowledge and make social connections. When used appropriately, the Internet is a powerful and positive tool. However, parents and school staff members need to be aware of the inherent risks technology presents. The community is invited to a special talk, Cyber Safety, on Thursday, November 12, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. at the Stony Brook Middle School.

The presentation is a collaboration between the Westford Parent Connection and the Westford Police Department. Steve Hoctor, Appeals Assistant District Attorney with the Middlesex Partnership For Youth, is the key speaker. Attendees with learn about online issues impacting young people, such as social networking sites, predators, and sexting. The discussion will outline prevention and intervention strategies for parents, teachers, and other school staff members. Mr. Hoctor will go over the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office Cyber Protection Program, created in 2007 by District Attorney Gerry Leone. In addition, Westford Police Officer Michael Croteau will be on hand that evening to provide the law enforcement perspective.

The talk is free and open to the public, and is geared primarily to parents and teachers of middle school students. However, the information may be helpful for parents of upper elementary and high school students, as well. CALL FOR ARTISTS FIRST ANNUAL ‘ARTISTS FOR ARTISTS’ GALA AND FUNDRAISER

It’s not too early to plan ahead…The Westford Academy Visual Art Department in partnership with students from the Westford Academy Chapter of the National Art Honor Society is seeking artists to donate artwork to be sold at a silent auction. The silent auction will be held at the Parish Center for the Arts in Westford on March 19, 2010 from 7:00-9:00 PM. Proceeds from this event will benefit art students at Westford Academy to help defray the cost of Advanced Placement Studio Art exams, cover entrance fees to art competitions such as Art All State and the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards Competition and to establish an art scholarship for students considering post secondary study in the visual arts. Artwork can be either two- or three-dimensional. Two-dimensional work should be matted, but not necessarily framed.

Underage Drinking and Marijuana Discussed October 22

Think underage drinking is merely an inevitable rite of passage? Think marijuana is basically harmless? Think again. Underage drinking is a common and pervasive problem not only in Westford, but in many surrounding towns. Marijuana use is common, too. In fact, just last spring, a number of Westford middle school students were caught with marijuana. Unfortunately, the age at which many kids start drinking and taking drugs is getting younger and younger. What can parents do?

Come to the Westford Parent Connection’s next presentation, Double Jeopardy: Underage Drinking And Marijuana. Marilyn Belmonte, a favorite speaker here in town, brings her vast knowledge and experience to the issue of young kids doing drugs. She will share with parents the signs of use and abuse and tell them what their next steps should be. Even if parents do not suspect their kids of drug use, Marilyn’s presentation is eye-opening and practical in terms of keeping the lines of communication open between family members. Marilyn’s talk is scheduled for Thursday, October 22, at 7:00 p.m. in the Stony Brook Middle School Auditorium. Tickets for the event are $5 in advance and available at the Roudenbush Community Center, 65 Main Street, Westford, until noon on October 22. After 12:00 p.m., tickets may be purchased at the door for $8.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 437 ORIENTEERING INVITATIONAL

Open to all boys ages 12-18 on Sunday, October 18^th from 2-5 PM at Kennedy Pond in Westford – parking at the end of Trailside Way. Come and take advantage of the 5 orienteering courses at the pond as well as the outdoor setting to introduce you to the Troop, Scouting skills, back country survival techniques and, of course, refreshments. Boy Scout Troop 437 meets on Thursday nights from 7:00 to 8:30 PM when school is in session at the American Legion at 114 Dunstable Road. It is an enthusiastic, outdoors-focused Troop with a dedicated group of adult leaders and alumni. Troop 437 has a full calendar, with one weekend adventure per month, in addition to other events and service projects. Fundraising is limited to once a year so that the boys may dedicate their efforts to offering the boys opportunities of their choosing.

This multi-media, interactive stage show, endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and winner of the prestigous Parent’s Choice Gold Award, will be brought to Westford Academy Performing Arts Center (WA PAC), 30 Patten Rd, Westford, on Friday, February 13, 7:00 PM.
Generously sponsored by Lowell General Hospital, Pediatrics West, PC, JuicePlus+ and Cooking To Learn; this health & wellness show will not only entertain, but also educate families about the human body & how it functions, healthy habits, good nutrition, and physical fitness. The show is open to the public, free and appropriate for families with children in Kindergarten – Gr 5.
Wellness posters created by 2nd and 3rd graders from Westford Public Schools will be showcased in the lobby from 6 – 7 pm as part of the ‘Bodyology Art Gallery’ followed by the family performance from 7 – 8 pm. Organized by the Westford Elementary PTO / K-5 Enrichment Team. This project is also partially funded by a grant from the Westford Education Foundation.

Art Department News: 2009 Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards

The Art department would like to recognize the following students whose artwork has been recognized in the 2009 Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards Competition. Derya Akbaba, Alice Chan, and Caitlin O’Hare earned gold key for their work. Olivia Gardner, Carolyn Meurer and Irene Yuan earned silver key. While Lizzy Britton, Emily Cacciatore, Alice Chan, Zach Richards, and Sarah Yim earned honorable mention. Mike Flannery was awarded a gold key for his senior portfolio entry.

Darien Stankowski and Ellen Haynes were nominated to begin the selection process to attend Art All State at the Worcester Art Museum in May 2009.

From the Music Department:

Congratulations to Eileen Liu and Jared Forsyth for being accepted to the Massachusetts All State Music Festival. Eileen was chosen as first violin, third chair in the orchestra and Jared will be singing Bass in the chorus. They will be rehearsing at Boston’s Seaport Hotel March 20-21 and the concert will be held at Symphony Hall on March 22nd. We are proud to have them represent Westford Academy!

School Canceled…. Again?

It has now become a ritual in the Westford household that Superintendent Olsen will call around 8pm to tuck us in and to let us know that school will be canceled the next day. So far, four days of cancellations. Tonight he was a bit late, but yet he did not disappoint the children of Westford.

Below is a picture of The Center of town Westford. This was taken on Tuesday, five days after the ice storm that occurred on Thursday night. The debris and fallen trees are still not cleaned up. There is so much damage that the city and utility crew just can’t keep up.

Once On This Island Jr. by Blanchard Middle School Kids

The Blanchard Middle School kids will be performing a play called “Once On This Island, Jr.” on December 5, 6 and 7 at the Blanchard Middle School. The play is produced by The Blanchard-Stony Brook Productions, with the help of students of the Blanchard Middle School, parent volunteers, and volunteers from the community.

Performance Dates and Times:
Friday, Dec. 5th @ 7 pm
Saturday, Dec. 6th @ 2 pm and 7 pm
Sunday, Dec. 7th @ 2 pm
